So the laws of mathematics come from God. As historian R.G. Collingwood sums up the matter: “The possibility of an applied mathematics is an expression, in terms of natural science, of the Christian belief that nature is the creation of an omnipotent God.”8 Or as the skeptical husband of author Kathleen Norris explained to her, “If there is a God, it’s because the prime number theorem is true, and someone had to be organizing it.”9

Interestingly, even atheist Steven Hawking seems to hint that numbers come from God, since he edited a book in 2005 titled God Created the Integers.10 This is an adaptation of the statement by the mathematician Leopold Kronecker: “God made the integers; all else is the work of man.”11 (By the way, Kronecker converted to Christianity in the last year of his life.)

Here, it seems to me, we have come to the ground of what Hawking really believes in, which are the laws of mathematics and physics. As he himself explained in interviews, he uses the word God “as a shorthand for the laws of physics,” and further clarified,
